Mail for Mac OS X 10.8.5 - First Time Set Up. This article will guide you to set up your EarthLink e-mail account in this version for Macintosh.

You will need the server settings for your e-mail address. Go to EarthLink Server Settings to get these settings.

Open Mail from the Dock or Applications folder.

If this is the first e-mail account you're setting up, the "Welcome to Mail" assistant may appear. If so, click Continue.

If not, the mail window opens.


Then, click File and select Add Account.

In the Add Account section:

  • Type in the name you want to give in the Full Name field. Example - Earthlink.
  • Type in your e-mail address in the Email Address field.
  • Type in your password in the Password field.
  • Click on Continue.

In the Incoming Mail Server window, add the incoming Mail Server details.

  • For Account Type, select POP.
  • In the Incoming Mail Server field, type in your Incoming mail server (POP) according to the settings that you looked up in Step 1 (e.g. pop.earthlink.net).
  • In the User Name field, type in your EarthLink e-mail address (e.g. johndoe@earthlink.net).
  • In the Password field, type in your password.
  • click continue.

In Incoming mail security, select password under Authentication. Check SSL. Click continue.

In the Outgoing Mail Server window, click the arrow in the drop-down menu and select Edit Server List. Use smtpauth.earthlink.net

  • Check Use only this server.
  • Select smtpauth.earthlink.net
  • Check Use authentication.
  • Type in Username and Password.

Click on Continue.

Now you will get a window for Outgoing Mail Security. Select password in Authentication. Check SSL. Click continue.

You will now get an account summary of the new account to be created. Click on create.

Your account is created. You're now ready to send and receive e-mails on your Mac OS X 10.8.5.
